Hello Folks, welcome back to Learnizo Global. Hope this article finds you all safe and healthy in the current pandemic. This post will give you a clear understanding of the trending and hot topic in the communication industry, Open RAN (Open Radio Access Network). Open RAN has been chosen by a number of mobile network operators worldwide for their 5G deployment. We will also have an insight into the benefits and challenges of Open RAN deployment later in the Article.

What is Open RAN?

“Open RAN is the industry name given to all those standardized open interfaces that are defined in specifications provided by 3GPP, O-RAN Alliance, IEEE, and other SDOs (Standard Development Organizations who have qualifications to become future 3GPP partners).”

The idea of creating Open RAN standards is to bring in new RAN vendors and to give more options to single-vendor solutions. Adopting these standardized open interfaces, mobile network operators can accommodate multiple vendor equipment, instead of proprietary hardware and software from a handful of RAN vendors.”

The Open RAN standards are based on the vRAN (Virtual RAN) specifications framed by 3GPP which are in turn based on SDN (Software Defined Networks). vRAN allows transforming hardware-based functions of a RAN into software through NFV (Network Function Virtualization). vRAN is more flexible than hardware-based RAN as it is able to adapt to changes in the network faster. It allows change in the network by updating only software without having to replace hardware through the entire infrastructure. Thus it facilitates network malleability for operators. Also, mobile network operators are benefited from improved security and reduced cap-ex and op-ex costs.

Open-RAN

Among Open RAN standardization bodies, TIP (Telecom Infra Project) and O-RAN Alliance are major contributors.

Telecom Infra Project (TIP)
Founded in 2016, TIP is a diverse community including hundreds of participating companies – from service providers and technology partners to system integrators and other connectivity stakeholders. The core activities of TIP are to create high-level technical requirements for significant use cases; test and validate the network elements, products, and configurations; and finally to share best practices for commercial deployments of the tested technologies.

O-RAN Alliance
O-RAN Alliance has been founded in February 2018 by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO, and Orange. Since then, O-RAN Alliance has become a worldwide community of mobile network operators, vendors, and research & academic institutions operating in the Radio Access Network (RAN) industry.
O-RAN Alliance’s mission is to re-shape the RAN industry towards more intelligent, open, virtualized, and fully interoperable mobile networks. Openness allows smaller players in the RAN market to launch their own services or customize their networks. The Alliance’s solution to growing network complexity and demand is to enable automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning to deploy, optimize, and operate the network.

Benefits of deploying Open RAN

By using multivendor technologies in Open RAN, mobile network operators have more choice in RAN elements and flexibility to choose the functionality of their RANs according to the operator’s need. RAN Vendor specific

An open RAN ecosystem gives network operators more choice in RAN elements. With a multi-vendor catalog of technologies, network operators have the flexibility to tailor the functionality of their RANs to the operators’ needs. Total vendor lock-in is no longer an issue when organizations are able to go outside of one RAN vendor’s equipment and software stack.

The virtualization-based infrastructure that is a fundamental part of open RAN standards helps network operators to have a faster time to market than they would with a hardware-based infrastructure because bringing a new feature to the network can be as easy as remotely updating the network’s Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). Also, network administrators can take advantage of automation and improved network visibility with virtualization.

Open RAN standards give new equipment vendors the chance to enter the market which in turn raises competition and thus reducing costs to benefit customers.

Challenges of Open RAN

If an organization uses a multi-vendor model it takes time and money to isolate and identify the problem and then get support from the correct vendor, while an organization having a single vendor does not have to hunt to find the responsible party. And in a multi-vendor solution, a vendor may cite integration issues to pass the blame to another vendor.

Interoperability between equipment and software from different vendors requires proper coordination and involvement in open RAN interfaces and elements. Otherwise, it will create inconsistency in the interoperability and integration of equipment and software from multiple vendors.

We will discuss in detail the TIP Project groups, O-RAN alliance workgroups, Architecture of Open RAN, Open RAN standards for Network Controllers and Open RAN standards for interfaces in further articles.
