Network Functions Virtualization (NFV): Easier and Faster way for introducing new services

Hello folks, Welcome back to Learnizo Global. Service providers in the current market scenario are facing tough competition to provide new and better services due to ongoing technological advancements and customer requirements. To stay in profitable business, service providers must update the business networks with new applications and network functions frequently in line with technological innovations and customer requirements. Investing in infrastructure and its maintenance for updating the network every time is not a feasible solution. This article will help you understand a concept known as NFV (Network Function Virtualization) that helps service providers introduce new functional domains in the existing network infrastructure in an easy, efficient, fast, and cost-effective way without a huge investment in network infrastructure. We will understand the idea of NFV, its origin, standardization, benefits, and challenges. In our further articles, we shall understand NFV management, NFV orchestration, Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV), and NFV cloud.

What is Network Function Virtualization?

Network functions virtualization (NFV) replaces the traditional network by virtualizing network services rather than operating them on proprietary dedicated hardware.

That hardware is now just commodity hardware that runs software to accomplish functions such as routing, and firewalls. What used to require a physical replacement when technology advanced, now just needs to be patched or updated.

Companies using NFV can rely on edge computing to connect their offices to resources on the cloud. NFV services are deployed on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware platforms, typically running on Intel x86-based hardware and standard switching hardware. The combination of base-level hardware with this novel type of software creates a virtualized network that is not dependent on specific hardware.

NFV along with SDN (Software Defined Networking) creates a network that is built, operated, and managed by software. NFV virtualizes network infrastructure and SDN centralizes network control.

Origin and standardization of NFV

European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), was the first major organization to release an NFV standard in October 2013. The ETSI ISG NFV (ETSI Industry Specification Group for NFV) is a specifications group that has set standards for NFV management and network orchestration (MANO) and network orchestration (NFV MANO). ETSI is also instrumental in collaborative projects like OPNFV (Open Platform for NFV).

""

NFV decouples software implementations of Network Functions from the computation, storage, and networking resources they use.

The decoupling exposes a new set of entities, the Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs), and a new set of relationships between them and the NFV Infrastructure (NFVI). VNFs can be chained with other VNFs and/or Physical Network Functions (PNFs) to realize a Network Service (NS).

The Network Functions Virtualization Management and Orchestration (NFV-MANO) architectural framework has the role to manage the NFVI and orchestrate the allocation of resources needed by the Network Services and VNFs.

Benefits of NFV

Network Operators who prefer virtualization of their network can save money, shorten the time-to-market for new or updated products, and better scale and adjust resources available to applications and services. Other benefits include:

Less Vendor Lock-in

Running VNFs (Virtual Network Functions) on COTS hardware means organizations aren’t locked into proprietary, fixed-function boxes that take significant time and labor to deploy and configure.

Greater Resource Efficiency

A virtualized data center or other infrastructure is more efficient to operate because more can be done with less. Datacenter footprint, power consumption, and cooling requirements can all be reduced or kept the same, but with increased workload capacity. This is possible because a single server can run multiple VNFs at once therefore fewer servers are needed to do the same amount of work. When a network needs to be changed, an organization can update its infrastructure through software instead of installing and provisioning the new equipment. The instances where an organization needs to physically update its network and data centers are significantly reduced.

Flexibility

Organizations can use the agility of NFV to quickly adapt to changing business requirements and new market opportunities. In other words, the time-to-market period is shortened because the network infrastructure can be changed to adequately support the organization’s new products. A network that has gone through NFV is also able to adjust quickly and easily to changes in resource demand as traffic coming to the data center increases or decreases.

Scaling up and down in the number of VMs and the resources provided to them can be done automatically through SDN software.

Traditional network architectures are defined as logical systems, usually connected to specific physical hardware or facilities, used to deliver a service. With NFV, these elements become virtualized as software installations that are placed on commodity hardware. These boxes can then be used for multiple purposes instead of a single purpose.

An NFV platform is designed to host any of the numerous VNFs being offered on the marketplace. These VNFs are so numerous because any network service or function that is not a piece of hardware can be a VNF. These include services such as load balancing, DDoS (Distributed Denial of service) protection, and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) functions.

We will discuss NFV MANO (Management and Network Orchestration) in our next article. Till then stay safe and happy learning with Learnizo Global.
